Description
The Scrivania delle Chimere is a monumental work of artistic cabinetmaking by Aly Mohsen, conceived as a unique, one-of-a-kind piece and executed in accordance with the traditions of high European fine woodworking. The work occupies a space between functional sculpture and symbolic artifact, integrating structure, decoration, and iconography into a unified artistic whole.
The desktop is crafted from carefully selected walnut burl, distinguished by its complex, symmetrical grain pattern, enhanced through a refined finish that emphasizes both chromatic depth and material presence. The surface is framed by a polychrome marquetry border composed of white maple, ebony, and padauk, arranged in a continuous classical motif and executed with a high degree of technical precision.
The supporting structure is made of solid mahogany, used for the legs, aprons, and primary architectural elements. Vertical surfaces are enriched with hand-cut white maple inlays featuring ornamental and figurative motifs that engage in a balanced dialogue with the overall structure. The curved lower base and the connecting elements between the legs contribute to both the visual stability and the structural coherence of the piece.
A defining feature of the work is the presence of winged chimeras inlaid along the side panels. These figures carry an iconographic and symbolic significance, evoking themes of protection, strength, and transformation—recurring elements within Mohsen’s artistic research. Their inclusion is not merely decorative, but integral to the conceptual and narrative framework of the desk.
The desk is conceived as a functional artwork, in which practical use is subordinate to an overarching artistic vision. The quality of the materials, the entirely hand-executed craftsmanship, and the unity between structure and decoration establish the piece as an autonomous artistic object, intended for representational settings where it can be experienced and interpreted as a work of art in its own right.
